To foster connections and provide cohesiveness for professional communities, the Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education (JHU CTE) developed a Web-based tool, called the Electronic Learning Community (ELC). The ELC is a password-protected environment that promotes ongoing collaborative exchange and provides convenient channels for synchronous and asynchronous communication. The ELC empowers people separated by time and distance to engage in lively and enlightening professional discourse at their convenience - offering "just in time, just for me" solutions.
  • Pre-service and in-service educators communicate in the ELC by using chat, e-mail, instant message and bulletin board technology.
  • Announcements and shared, interactive calendars keep members up-to-date on community activities.
  • A rich repository of resources is available for ELC members. Participants can post, store, retrieve and share files making collaboration easy and effective.

CTE now maintains ELCs serving more than 10,000 members. Each ELC supports initiatives that fundamentally change the way educators are recruited, prepared, inducted, and mentored within the complex environment of today’s schools.
