MATN Fall 2013 Webinar Series

MATN Fall 2013 Webinar Series Presents:
Effective Writing Instruction for Students with Developmental Disabilities: Curriculum, Measurement, and Accommodations

This webinar series brings together 15+ years of research focused on developing methods that help students with developmental disabilities (DD) learn to write. I will not only describe my classroom-based research results, I will also share video of teachers in my research sites using effective writing instructional methods, tools, and strategies with students with DD.

The purpose of this three session webinar series is to show how high-quality differentiated writing instruction, paired with assistive writing software, and functional progress monitoring measures, can be used to foster writing development in students with developmental disabilities (DD). In the first webinar, I will share a scientifically-based writing curriculum for students with DD that combines a traditional Writers’ Workshop approach with strategy instruction and social interaction training. This curriculum draws upon the federal Common Core State Standards and targets development of writing, language and communication for a broad range of students with DD. In this curriculum -

Mini-lessons are taught using principles of strategy instruction (e.g., strategy tip support lesson content) and focus on teaching students writing and communication skills.

Independent writing fosters planning and composing by assisting students to write on self-selected topics. Accommodations (e.g., adult scaffolds and assistive technology) are provided to foster writing development and independence.

Author’s Chair provides an authentic environment for student authors to share their work – Authorship is celebrated as peers and adults listen, ask questions, and make comments.
